John Fox played defensive back for San Diego State University with former NFL player and Head Coach Her Edwards. He graduated with a teaching certificate and a degree in physical education.

John Fox signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to play in their secondary. After the two year contract ended, Fox retired as a player from he NFL to concentrate on a life of coaching.
